Pumpkins & Squash

Pumpkins and squash are now favourites of ours to grow on our Hitchin allotment. On Sunday we harvested them and will store them to eat over the coming winter. (Apparently they will keep till March though ours are eaten well before then.)

Harvested Pumpkin & Squash

The variety of pumpkin that I like best is called Crown Prince and I buy the seeds from Suttons.

It has a fantastic metallic blue colour with a deep orange flesh. It’s incredibly sweet when cooked and can be roasted, baked or boiled. They are easy to grow, once the seeds are sown in Spring all they need is a lot of room to ramble and lots of watering.

To me they represent what’s great about Autumn and are far too good to be wasted as Halloween decorations! For that I’ll pop to the local supermarket.
