For the last few years we have tried to grow broad beans on our allotment in Hitchin. Planting ‘Aquadulce Claudia’ in the autumn and allowing them to overwinter in the ground. However this only works if you have a mild winter.
The snow of this year ruined many people’s crops (including our own) and it was decided a new plan was needed for this years broad beans!
A few weeks ago I planted ‘Masterpiece Green Longpod’ from Thompson & Morgan into individual pots. They are a spring variety and will be ready to harvest just a little later in July or August. I’m hoping that these little healthy plants once in our allotment will reward us with some great tasting broad beans.
I love growing broad beans because they freeze beautifully and you can enjoy eating them all year round. Let’s hope we have more success with them this year!
